Wonders of Earth

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

(- from “Daffodils” by William Wordsworth)

Every time when I visit a garden or see a tree in full bloom this is the feeling that immediately pops up in my mind. This master of words captured, and how beautifully the power and aura of Daffodils that has remained with me since the school days; obviously it is one of my favorite poems. Anybody who is looking  for soulful words, calming therapy and good literature must read him.

As a kid I grew up amid the tall trees and huge farms surrounded by our humble home in the outskirts of Surat city, I dearly reminisce about the memories I made there as a child. Looking at vegetables growing, peacocks flaunting, smelling flowers and plucking up local fruits was a beautiful routine. As I grew up those memories color my thoughts and even today help me brighten up a dull day.

Today, my day starts with watching leaves unfurl, flowers bloom and plants grow and they always make me wonder how they do it standing at one place, dancing to the wind. It’s  a wonder and it all comes out of the same Earth. The red and white Champa (Plumeria), strikingly blue Aparajita (butterfly pea), the red red rose, mellow and yellow Chini gulab (Office time) and the list can never be made. Earth produces so many colors, from plain brown and black looking soil gives birth to colors and won’t it be correct to say that this brown soil has secret pockets filled with different colors and during night time it places them on the correct spot. Hence, the Earth is the secret behind all the colors and fragrances which these plants and trees give out; at least I believe so. Then what about the fruits we eat! The sour and sweet grapes, red and juicy apples, tangy Pineapple and sweet Jamuns; where does Earth get all these tastes from? Wait, what about all these veggies and the herbs and the medicinal plants. It’s Earth and only Earth which can make this happen.

Yes, it is Earth which keeps giving us unconditionally. It gives us every single thing which we need to live but what do we do ? Why are we giving Earth so much trash and plastic? On this Earth day let’s be a bit more sensible towards our acts and not make this only life giving place in the universe a trash bin. Do your bit, Earth will return you with bigger interest. Let us not forget that everything we eat, drink and breathe comes from Earth and not from machines.

Stop being a mad man before Earth turns mad.

On this note, I am reminded of a poem called “Zamin ko Jaadu aata hai '' by Gulzar sahab. This poem also talks about the same thing and I guess it is this piece of words that made me think more about how soil can create wonders.

Art comes with a price

Art comes with a price and the price is discipline. In an ideal situation, assuming you have absolutely no other drama going on in life and all you need to do is sit and work on your art, even in this best situation what is required is discipline, routine of creating every single day and making things work. Art is demanding and one undeniable thing is discipline, you need to sit down, create a routine and follow the routine even when you are at your lowest. Great people who have existed and the ones who exist now have one thing in common to say and that is “Take time out and devote it to your art every single day".  Lately, I haven't felt really motivated to do anything but I try my best to be disciplined and put out something and something is always better than nothing. This is one such piece I created out of this mantra, I was not having much of a clue about what I want to create, turned out beautiful. Calligraphy can find its way anywhere, said my teacher and it stuc...

Nothing is better than a classic

Nothing can beat a classic Mandala. In every art form classics remain unmatchable, the timelessness they have cannot be matched and they seem too far away from hiding any poorly treated but true issues. Their backbone is their mirroring quality and impeccable strength to represent the truth. Like a good movie a good painting will definitely remind you about your life, your struggles, your hesitations and the truth hidden behind the sheets of sugar coated lies.  Best art comes out when you are bound; you are put under a number of restrictions. One flourishes under the pressure, limited resources makes us understand the importance of resources and makes us wiser; this happens because our energy gets focused on those limited things and gives space to organize and use them in the best way. It is a kind of a freedom one feels while working with boundaries. You know how big your arena is and how much you are allowed to stretch. While creating this Mandala, I had nothing in my mind....

Flashback: Mandala the life savior

It has been more than two years since I started making Mandalas. When I drew my first Mandala it was just for fun and the curiosity to create something new, since then Mandalas have been like a friend who is always present to listen to me and hold my hand. Over the time we have developed a bond which imparts energy to me and has become my muse. It has helped me get through my worst and cheered me at my best. Evolving with mandalas has been a thing, it is like a friendship. A kind of a friendship in which you know that there is someone at bay, and no matter if it has been months for years without talking but it is just there unconditionally. For me, Mandalas has been this unconditional love and support. It has taught me not just what it is (what mandala is?) but also helped me in awakening a part of myself which is mostly sleeping.   As it is said that Mandalas are a source of energy in itself and rightly so but to me this art is not just any art but something that holds ...
